2015 was the second year The Bahamas National Sailing School
and Nassau Yacht Club have hosted the Cecil G Cooke Memorial Jr Regatta. Sponsored by Subway and organized by Sandra
Cooke, this regatta honors the late Cecil Cooke, one of this country’s great
sailors who competed with Sir Durward Knowles’ in the 1960 Tokyo Olympics when
they won the first ever gold medal for The Bahamas. Having a great interest in
youth sailing, he would have thoroughly enjoyed this weekend’s event, as did all
the youth and parents who participated.

This regatta was the largest junior sailing event ever in
Nassau and is one of four major junior regattas held each year in The Bahamas,
attracting sailors from a number of family islands. With 57 Participants from New
Providence, Grand Bahama, Harbour Island, Long Island and Abaco, the results
showed just how competitive our young sailors are throughout the country.

the first place finisher in the Optimist Championship Fleet as this is the

because of this, the group Cecil Cooke would have been most supportive of.

13 year old from Nassau. He won convincingly in this competitive 26 boat fleet
by placing first in all seven races. This makes it his third major win this
year, the other two being KPMG Championship Regatta and The Bahamas Youth
Olympic Regatta. The Long Island trio of Isaac Fox, Luke Knowles and Enrique
Wells battled it out for the second and third place trophies. Isaac and Luke
were tied for second place and Enrique was one point behind them. Isaac won the
tie-break which gave him second, Luke was third and Enrique took fourth with
Melisha Higgins from Harbour Island taking top female. You couldn’t have asked
for any closer or more exciting racing.

Sands and his younger sister Rachel showed their more experienced big city
rivals from Nassau just how to do it.
The only youth sailors in their tiny settlement, Branden and Rachel
largely train in a bubble of their own on Cherokee Sound with their father
coaching them but without the benefit of being able to train with other sailors
on a regular basis. When possible, their parents make the 40 minute trek with
them to Marsh Harbour and send them on the ferry to Hope Town, Abaco's only
active junior fleet with experienced coaches.
The perseverance of both he and his sister and the extensive
encouragement of their parents Tim and

Spencer Cartwright who is the current and 4 times National
Champion in the Optimist Dinghy class has now won the Bahamas Junior Sunfish
National Championship for his first time. Pushing hard and in the mix for top
honors was Cochise Burrows. Such close racing made for a very suspenseful and
exciting series. In the end Spencer beat Cochise by three points.

fairly shifty from the west, which made for fun and interesting sailing. When
taking the lead in any of the races it was extremely hard to keep it.
Positions, particularly in the last race constantly changed. One might say it
was all about luck but in reality it was very much a game of patience,
“heads-up sailing” and outthinking the opponents in this twenty boat fleet.
Almost all of them learnt to sail in the Optimist Dinghy class and have now
been sailing a few years. As Coach Dunkley put it, “ It is impressive to see how
well the youngsters from Harbour Island and Long Island are sailing. It is obvious
their sailing schools and clubs do a tremendous job in teaching them. So while
we congratulate the youngsters for their outstanding performance I would also
like to congratulate the organizers and

the Cartwright families, especially Zoe and Mellisa in Long Island, who do the

The 15-year-old will lead the 14-strong Bahamas team that features athletes in athletics, swimming and tennis but the eyes will firmly be on sailing's de Souza at the front of the pack.

"I'm very excited because I'm the flag bearer from the Bahamas because it's the 50th anniversary since Sir Durward Knowles won a gold medal in the Star class so they decided to pick me as the flag carrier just to honour that," explained de Souza.

"I couldn't be any happier about it," said de Souza with a beaming smile. "I'm almost speechless and I'm really proud of myself and my country that we all made it to this event. We're all from a small country and there are so many people here who come from countries with millions and we're a country of thousands. I'm pretty proud to be able to carry the flag and represent my country.

"He's a Bahamian hero to a lot of people because he was our first gold medallist ever and a lot of people look up to him. A lot of buildings have been named after him and he's pretty important in our culture."

Knowles and Cecil Cooke took the Bahamas first Olympic gold medal on 23 October 1964 at the Tokyo Olympic Sailing Competition in the Star class. Fifty years on and the Bahamas National Olympic Committee has put the spotlight on sailing. Knowles and Cooke will be honoured on the anniversary of their victory by a luncheon where the IOC will present Sir Durward with the prestigious President's Trophy - the highest honour given to athletes by the IOC. Sandra Cooke, the daughter of Cecil Cooke, will receive the trophy on behalf of her late father.

Representatives from the International Olympic Committee, International Sailing Federation (ISAF), Japanese Olympic Committee and the Commonwealth Games Federation are expected to attend.

Knowles took his nation's first Olympic medal at the Melbourne 1956 Olympic Games and then eight years later picked up the first gold. In total the Bahamas NOC has five gold, two silver and five bronze medals with the foundations laid by Knowles.

In advance of de Souza heading to Nanjing for the Youth Olympic Games, Knowles gave him a few encouraging words, "A lot of times I am very modest and he said I need to be a little bit more confident in what I do and he said go out there and try your best," said de Souza.

Scheduled to start at 20:00 local time on Saturday 16 August at the Olympic Sports Centre Stadium, the Opening Ceremony of the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympic Games promises to be a spectacular and unmissable affair. The IOC will be streaming the show live on its online channel, Olympic.tv, on www.olympic.org and on the official Olympic YouTube channel, with all three platforms providing coverage of all competitions from Sunday 16 August onwards.

Sailing commences on Monday 18 August at 11:00 local time and will conclude on Saturday 23 August.ISAF Website
http://www.sailing.org/events/youtholympicgames/index.php
Entrieshttp://www.sailing.org/events/youtholympicgames/entries/qualification_system.php
Nanjing 2014 Website
http://www.nanjing2014.org/en/

About The Youth Olympic Games

The Youth Olympic Games brings 28 sports together in a unique multi-sport event for young athletes who are given a once in a lifetime opportunity to participate in high-level sporting competitions while also engaging in a Culture and Education Programme (CEP) focused on the Olympic spirit and Olympic values, skill development, well-being and healthy lifestyle, social responsibility and expression through digital media.

At the inaugural Youth Olympic Games, Singapore 2010, Ian Barrows (ISV) and Lara Vadlau (AUT) won gold on the Boys and Girls One Person Dinghy, Byte CII, whilst Mayan Rafic (ISR) and Siripon Kaewduang-Ngam (THA) took the honours in the Boys and Girls Windsurfer, Techno 293.

The same classes will be on show at the sailing event at Nanjing 2014 and will bring 100 of the finest young sailors, aged 15-16, together on Nanjing's Jinniu Lake.

For each of the four sailing events, there are seven Youth Olympic Qualification Events (YOQE).
In this space recently, Paul de Souza was showcased as one of those young stars expected to rebrand the international sailing culture in The Bahamas.
deSouza is quite a young champion in his own right, perhaps the most versatile of them all.
There are others though, who are part of the wave that will enable The Bahamas to regain its worldwide reputation in international sailing. They were in action this past weekend in Montagu Bay during the Bahamas Youth Regatta. Robert Dunkley, Jimmy Lowe and others of that ilk have been doing a phenomenal job with the young male and female skippers throughout the country.
The Youth Regatta was evidence of where the program is. The international sailing environment in the country is vibrant, thanks to names such as Tahj Ramirez, Alvin Lewis, Maclean Goodfellow, Paloma Cartwright, Spencer Cartwright, Alande Forbes, Brandon Sands, Cochise Burrows, George Delafe, Delaney Goodfellow, Joshua Higgins, Isaac Fox, Luke Browning, Daisy Tinker, Ben Derbyshire and Melisha Higgins. They, a few others and, de Souza represent the solid base of junior international sailing and the future of the sport on the senior level.
Enough can't be said about the dedication of Dunkley, Lowe and their associates. They have crafted a magnificent program out of which has come such an outstanding product as Ramirez.
What he did over the weekend was spectacular.
In the seven races on the Optigold Class, young Ramirez crossed first four times. The other three races saw him capture second place. There is not much better one could ask for in any series of sailing.
A lot of the outstanding international sailors from the past have gone on into eternity. I refer to Bobby Symonette, Basil Kelly, Sloane Farrington, Cecil Cooke to name a few. The architects of the international sailing movement in the country, Sir Stafford Sands and Sir Roland Symonette have past also.
Still with us are Sir Durward Knowles and Godfrey Kelly. What's happening now with international sailing in The Bahamas is inspirational. The accomplishments of the pioneers of international sailing in the country present a monumental hill for the present-day stars to climb. With the patriarch of Bahamian international sailing, Sir Durward Knowles, leading the way, The Bahamas has a world championship, an Olympic gold medal, Olympic bronze medal, a 5.5 Meters world championship, several Sunfish World championships, a Pan American Games gold medal and world ocean racing success in its résumé.
Yes, it is a tall order for Ramirez, de Souza and company.
Nevertheless, they are moving along quite well on a very good pace.
Best wishes to Dunkley, Lowe and their colleagues with the program. The expectation is that the new era international sailing stars will make their fellow Bahamians proud, continually.

This year's Bahamas Laser National Championship was sailed in Montagu Bay (May 24 & 25). Winds were light and surprisingly steady out of the east which made for very fair and competitive sailing. Eight sailors competed of which seven were junior sailors. All were from BNSS in Nassau. It was the first year in many that no one from the islands participated. The sailors especially from Freeport were missed as they always fielded a strong team.

Paul de Souza continued to show his dominance in the Laser Class as he won five out of the six races. Alande Forbes, his old sparing partner who has recently rejoined the BNSS Laser Team took second and Nathaniel Burnside, who over the last year has improved tremendously took third place. Congratulations to all who competed and a big thank you for Fernando De Cardenas and Lori Lowe for running the races and Nassau Yacht Club for hosting the event.

What a great weekend of racing for our junior sailors. A light to moderate breeze out of the south made for great tactical sailing. The key was getting off to good starts and sailing where there was good pressure (wind).

In total we had 37 competitors from Nassau, Harbour Island and Current Island and our winners were:

Optimist Gold (Advanced) Fleet - Cochise Burrows

Optimist Silver (Intermediate) Fleet - Logan Major (Harbour Island)

Optimist Green Fleet - Alvin lewis (Harbour Island)

Charleston Race Week is North America’s largest keelboat
regatta, featuring hundreds of boats and thousands of sailors from all over the

The Bahamian Team, sailing boat #6 (‘Quick Beat’) had a
tough first day, but rebounded on day 2 to place themselves into 3rd

Greg Fisher, Director of Sailing at the College of

“I couldn't be more proud of Chris
Sands, Brent Burrows and their teammate Stefan Kuehn with their tremendous
performance at Charleston Race Week. For them to jump in a boat they hadn't
sailed a week before, sail in a wide range of challenging conditions against a
tough & proven group of J/22 sailors, and finish a solid third is
tremendous. They worked hard in their practice sessions before the event, and were
diligent in their pre-race preparation. It had to be special for Chris, a top
starter on our varsity Dinghy team, and Brent, one of our best on our varsity Offshore team to be able to sail together again and finish so well!”

It is worth noting that the Bahamians finished as the top charter

support in providing a boat.

The 24th Annual Homer Lowe Regatta was held in Marsh Harbour this past weekend, for Sunfish and Optis. Sailors came from Great Guana Cay, Grand Bahama, Cherokee, Marsh Harbour, and Man-O-War Cay, in addition to the Hope Town Sailing Team.

Representing Hope Town in the Sunfish Class of 12 boats: Richard Cook, Andrew Wilhoyte, Colin Buffin, and Jeff Gale.

Junior Sailors from Hope Town (including our Cherokee Juniors) in the Opti Class of 19 boats: Yvinski Alcime, Ethan Lowe, Malie Sweeting, Alexis Cook, Branden Sands, Joey Gale, Robin Jentil, Bessie Lowe, Chloe Sweeting, Andrew Joseph, and Rachel Sands.

On Saturday, the wind was light and fluky, and everyone got a little wet from passing showers. However, all four scheduled races were held, thanks to a lot of quick work by the Race Committee, who had to move the marks to follow the shifting wind direction. However, no one could have predicted the massive 45 degree wind shift in the middle of the fourth race, which trapped some unlucky sailors well to leeward of the mark!

Sunday's two races were sailed in steadier winds, much to the relief of everyone! After putting away the boats, sailors gathered at Snappa's for lunch and Awards.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
AWARDS PRESENTATION Winner of the Homer Lowe Sunfish Trophy (for the third time straight!) was Andrew Wilhoyte. Presenting the trophy to him was Ethan Lowe, great-grandson of Homer Lowe, who sailed in the Opti Class in his first-ever regatta.

Second place in Sunfish was Regatta Organizer Jim Kaighin, and third Duane Wallis - both from Marsh Harbour. A close fourth was Jeff Gale. Colin Buffin took 6th place, and Richard Cook 9th.

Winner of the Opti Trophy was Branden Sands, with Joey Gale in second. They were often within a boat-length of each other, working for the slightest advantage. So pre-occupied with covering each other, they let Chloe Sweeting slip through for a win in one of the races! Chloe took third place overall, and Rachel Sands took fourth, almost beating her brother in the last race.

Robin Jentil received special mention during the Awards for a great act of sportsmanship which the Race Committee witnessed - helping to coach a struggling first-time racer over the finish line.

The Race Committee promises a blow-out event for the Silver Jubilee (25th) Homer Lowe Regatta. Hopefully the Hope Town Sailing Team will again be well-represented!

Big thanks to the Race Committee!
